To overturn a crate about edge AB, the crate must be turned so that the diagonal surface shaded in Fig. becomes vertical (see previous problem) from this point the crate will fall as a result of the force of gravity. Thus work must be done in raising the centre of gravity of the crate to the corresponding height. This work equals

W = mg .

In overturning the crate about edge AB we have that h = 0.6m, h ′ = 1 m, W = 0.2 ton/m. In overturning the crate about edge A ′ B ′ we have that h = 0.8 m, h ′ = 1 m, W = 0.1 ton/m. The total work done is 0.2 + 0.1 = 0.3 ton/m.
